Everything they told you about manifestation is wrong. And right.

I study how the brain rewires.

And here is what I know about why everything they told you about manifestation is wrong. And right.

Neuroscientist Alvaro Pascual-Leone at Harvard had one group of volunteers practise a piano exercise for five days. Another group only imagined playing the same notes, same rhythm, purely in their minds. After five days, brain scans showed that both groups had developed nearly identical changes in their motor cortex. The brains of the people who never touched a piano reorganised as if they had.

Your brain does not fully distinguish between vivid imagination and real experience.

Researchers at the Cleveland Clinic found something even more striking. People who only imagined contracting a specific finger muscle for 12 weeks, without moving it once, increased that muscle's strength by 35 percent (Ranganathan et al., 2004). The group who physically trained the same muscle reached 53 percent. Worth noting: this was a small, rarely used muscle chosen precisely because it had room to improve, so the effect is real but should not be read as a blanket promise for every muscle. Still, thought alone produced a meaningful share of the result of real exercise.

Before I gave my master's graduation speech, I practised it in my head dozens of times. I saw the room. I saw the faces of my fellow students. I heard my own voice. By the time I actually stood there, it felt like I had already done it. Because neurologically, in part, I had.

But I also had to get on that stage.

Imagination alone builds pathways to nowhere. Pascual-Leone's mental piano players still needed real practice to match the physical group. The pathway needs action to complete the circuit. Visualise, believe, and then move.

Your imagination is not a dream. It is a blueprint. And your actions make it reality.

Have you ever made your imagination work for you?
